1130 - Introduction to Project 1: Drift Map
Walking on these streets, until the night falls, my life feels to me like the life they have. By day they’re full of meaningless activity; by night, they’re full of meaningless lack of it. By day I am nothing, and by night I am I. There is no difference between me and these streets, save they being streets and I a soul, which perhaps is irrelevant when we consider the essence of things. - Fernando Pessoa, from The Book of Disquiet
By July 10, each student will create a drift map of Porto, using the Google Maps API. Readings from MacCannell help us conceptualize the experience of being in another country, while Debord and Perec provide the initial framework for the drift or walk in the city. Our encounter with Porto is necessarily structured by our role as tourist. This role is a way of experiencing and representing – and therefore of writing - the foreignness and difference of the city. The drift map project asks you to approach this experience and representation from a different angle. Firstly, to approach the city through an itinerary not determined by the role of the tourist but through your individual movements and impulses. Second, to approach the city as a designed and lived environment. Thirdly, to use digital technology as the media that represents this other angle through Porto. You will wander through Porto with a partner for a pre-determined times. Wherever you stop or wherever you feel the impulse, you will write your impressions into your laptop or other mobile media, and you will take photos and videos. The genre of these reflections can be observational, describing what you see; or reflective, thinking about the experience; or narrative, telling the story of the place and the walk; or could take another form. Each of you will assemble and place your gathered materials onto a Google map using the API, creating a “version” of Porto.

By July 16, each student - working in two teams - will produce a proposal for communicating about Porto and the summer program to other WVU students. The plan will be based on a critique of the existing presentations of Porto in tourist materials. What other approaches are possible? The proposal may employ narrative, social-media, locative, and/or game-based approaches. It must clearly describe how you will use these approaches. It must include a detailed description of how the plan will be coordinated across media. It must also include a detailed timeline and a specific description of the deliverable. The teams will present the proposals on July 16, with a single one chosen for implementation and development throughout the remainder of the month.

WEEK 5
8/6 Monday
1700 - Final Portfolios Due [emailed portfolio URLs emailed to Professors Baldwin and Ballentine]
FINAL PROJECT DETAILS:
What should you deliver to us at the end of the course?
By 5pm on Monday August 6, you should email the url(s) of your portfolio to both Sandy and Brian. We should also receive a url for the group project. A single version of the group project must be accessible on one of your sites. It could be copied to all of the sites, but our concern is to receive the url for the version you - as a group - consider to be final.
What should you include in your group project?
You already have a clear plan for the group project. Of course, this project has an explicit purpose: to inform other WVU students about the Portugal program and to encourage (persuade) them to sign up. We look forward to seeing how you put together these materials.
What should you include in your individual site (on the community space)?
Your individual site is a portfolio of the materials you created during your time here. You should pick and choose - include anything you think is pertinent. At the least, you should include the following webpages:
1) A home page.
2) A page presenting your map with the texts and images from your drifting.
3) A page presenting your photos in a slideshow or similar presentation.
4) A page presenting your reflective writings.
You may want to include other pages as well. Your Flash/SoundSlides project should be on your individual site, presumably in a page of its own. What else? A contact page? A links page? The pages should link together and allow readers clear navigation from one page to the other.
Finally, the Flash/SoundSlides project developed with Rui should be available through your individual site as well as through the group project page.
