Saffron is a spice used in Mediterranean cooking. It is a potentially profitable crop since it is very expensive ($72.00 for a 0.25 oz packet). Saffron is the stamen of a crocus sativus flower which blooms for only three weeks every fall. How many square feet must be planted with autumn crocuses to produce a million dollars ($1.0×106) worth of saffron?  [lb=453.59g = 16 oz]

Potentially useful information:

  • A bulb requires one square foot to grow and produces four harvestable flowers per season.
  • Each flower contains three long, red-orange stamens.
  • It takes about 300 handpicked stamens to produce 1.00 gram of saffron.
