Founded
in 1922 by the The Women's Home Missionary Society
in Osage, WV, the Scott's Run Settlement House
was founded in response to the decline of the
previously booming mining industry in the area
and the subsequent poverty and hardships the community
faced. Initial programs at Scott's Run included
English literacy and citizenship courses for newly
arrived immigrants, as well as bible school for
the children and cooking, hygiene, and motherhood
courses for adults.
The
Scott's Run Writing Heritage web site features
articles by WVU history professor Ron Lewis, a
bibliography on Scott's Run, and samples of woodcuts
based on historical photographs of the area.
