Kellogg-WVU Expanding Community Partnership Program
Agreement: Writing Heritage Project
The
Writing Heritage Project builds upon an established
partnership between WVU’s English department and
the Scott’s Run Settlement House. While the past
partnership focused on increasing computer literacy,
this year's project will use computers and a much
wider range of activities to record the community’s
history and cultural heritage. Through new workshops
on memoir-writing, storytelling, and oral history
interviews, faculty and students from the department’s
Center for Writing Excellence and the West Virginia
Dialect Project will help the citizens of the
community assemble a rich set of materials about
Scott's Run. The partnership will help recognize
and value Appalachian culture by making these
materials available to a wide range of people
ranging from local residents to international
scholars. Specifically, the project plans to develop
a web site based on community materials, create
a small library at Scott's Run, and host events
such as public readings by students and community
members.
