Our next presenter is Ryan Costello, who has interviewed Monsieur Lucien Michaud who directs the Service de la Voirie in Les Sables. "Voirie" roughly means roads and passages, but when you get down to brass tacks, that means just about everything -- traffic signs, street lights, seaweed on the beach, and trash bags (like the one Ryan holds here). The city uses about 18,000 such bags on the beach a year. This is one of the ways Les Sables maintains its reputation for such a clean beach. Ryan also explains the "système éco-plage" (eco-beach) which is an experimental means of maintaining the sands of Les Sables d'Olonne. After all, "The Sands" without "sand" would be just another meaningless name. |
