Most families had a wardrobe similar to this. In the first part of the century through the thirties, many houses were not built with closets. This is mostly because people did not own the amount of clothing that is common today. Prior to the 1930s, a whole family's clothing could fit into a piece of furniture similar to this. This is why closets were considered luxury items and therefore, were taxable. Wardrobe
