7:30-9:00pm – “The Artist's Search for Voice: Synthetic Structure or Organic Utterance," Keynote address by composer Libby Larsen, CAC-Lyle B. Clay Concert Theatre, WVU.

THURSDAY OCTOBER 14

9:00-10:00pm- Reception for Libby Larsen and the opening of the Blanche Lazzell exhibition, CAC-Douglas O. Blaney Lobby

The exhibition “Blanche Lazzell: The Work of an American Modernist” in the Mesaros Galleries was organized by Robert Bridges, curator of the WVU Art Collection and the Mesaros Galleries.  Lazzell (1878-1956), who was born in nearby Maidsville , West Virginia , is a pivotal figure in the history of American modern art.  She devoted her life to coming to terms with the theoretical underpinnings of the modernist aesthetic.  She is important not only for her own work but also for her role as a translator of the achievements of the European modernists for her colleagues in America .  This exhibit presents a survey of her work in painting, printmaking, drawing, and decorative media.

7:30-9:30pm   WVU Symphony Orchestra Concert featuring Libby Larsen’s Still Life for Violin and introductory comments by the composer, CAC-Lyle B. Clay Concert Theatre. 

This concert is supported by a “Meet the Composer” grant.
