Summer Institute

The 2005 Summer Institute opened on July 5 at Mountainview Elementary School.  Nine  Fellows from local elementary, middle, high schools, and the university level were introduced to writing theory,  and they began a writing community.  Leaders for the Institute were Sally Manly of Marion County and Ellen Oderman of Monongalia County.

The Summer Fellows chose the mirror image logo of WVU and Mountainview School developed by the Fellows.  As a culmination of the two-day technology portion of the Institute, the Fellows created their own tote bags incorporating this design.

Teacher Consultants for the sessions included Dr. Laura Brady,   Dr. Gwen Rosenbluth, Margaret Clark,  JoEllen Snider, Tracey Chico, and Caressa Gearhart.  A special event during the Summer Institute was an all-day seminar featuring nationally known author Gretchen Bernabei. Her books include Why We Must Run With Scissors: Voice Lessons in Persuasive Writing (co-authored with Barry Lane) and Reviving the Essay – How to Teach Structure without Formula.

This invitation-only seminar sponsored by the West Virginia University Writing Project  helped the 2005 SI Fellows and  invited Writing Project Fellows humanize and conquer writing assessment with parent-pleasing, score-raising, kid-friendly exercises that actually help students become better writers!

Three follow-up sessions will be held in the Fall.  During these sessions, Fellows will have the opportunity to discuss progress in their classroom research, receive updates in writing theory, and share successes/questions in classroom practice.
