A logis has many architectural elements that were granted only to nobles. As you may know, the nobility of Europe originated in the warrior class of the dark ages. This is the "ahah", a product of light and not of dark, and it opens on to the grand gardens and woods just beyond. In fact this is the echo of the moats of the medieval castle, but in the Renaissance and the Enlightenment the function became decorative rather than military. It was more a window than a wall to the world beyond... |
