Hundreds of years earlier a more united Christendom had already worked miracles in this part of the world. The Abbey of Maillezais will celebrate this year its 1000th anniversary. Founded in 1003 by the Dukes of Aquitaine this monastery would be among the most prosperous in the world for hundreds of years. Its ruin came in fact at the hands of Protestants in the generation before Richelieu began his campaign to wipe out this heresy.
