La Rochelle is a "new city" by French standards. It dates back only a thousand years. Originally the town was located near here in Chatellaillon, now a village outside the walls of this fortress city. The lord of Chatellaillon, however, made a grave mistake in defying the Duke of Aquitaine. He and his were crushed and the Duke pushed in, fortifying a new city and granting it the rights there pertaining. |
