Blackminster, gray skies.

The leader of these monks was the legendary Saint Philibert.  He and his Benedictines came here in the year 674.  They spread the word and the work of Christ.  A once savage land became a source of faith and of wealth.  When Philbert died in 684 his body was buried in the island's main church.  It rested there for a hundred years before these shores were again turned to barbary -- this time by the Vikings come from the north.  To preserve them from the barbarians, Philbert's remains were moved inland all the way to Burgundy, where they lie today.  Noirmoutier was able to recover two relics from the saint's body.  Those relics, bones from his body, are now the object of pilgrimage for many visitors to Noirmoutier.
