One of our textbooks for this course is the Michelin Guide Vert (Green Guide). It is actually filled with important information about the Vendée region -- history, geography, legends, art, etc. Our lectures today focus on introductions to the history of Vendée from pre-history to today and on an overview of the geography. The Vendée consists of three major topographical areas -- the coastal region (le littoral), the marshes both northern and southern (le marais breton, le marais poitevin), and the interior farm and woodlands (le bas bocage, le haut bocage). |
