Mark your calendar! The fifth annual West
Virginia Book Festival will be held October 22 & 23, 2005, at the
Charleston Civic Center. Each year the festival offers something for book
lovers of all ages and interests: authors, publishers, book vendors, the
Festival Marketplace, a special section just for children, a used book sale,
author events, workshops and panel discussions.
This year, the West
Virginia Writing Project sponsors author Sharyn McCrumb, who will be speaking on Saturday, Oct 22 at 1:30 p.m. in WV Room
105, Charleston Civic Center
Sharyn McCrumb's novels celebrate the history and folklore of Appalachia. She is the author of St. Dale (2005), The
Songcatcher, The Ballad of Frankie
Silver, The Rosewood Casket, She Walks These Hills, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, and
many others. McCrumb's books have been named Notable Books for the Year by The New York Times and The Los
Angeles Times. "My books are
like Appalachian quilts," says McCrumb. "I take brightly colored
scraps of legends, ballads, fragments of rural life, and local tragedy, and I
piece them together into a complex whole that tells not only a story, but also
a deeper truth about the culture of the mountain South."
·
The West Virginia Writing Project network is sponsoring a banquet
the evening of October 22nd at the Marriott and Sharyn McCrumb will
be the guest speaker.
