The 2003 Summer Instutue opened on June 8 at Mountainview Elementary School.  Twelve members from local schools were introduced to writing theory,  and they began a writing community.  Leaders for the Institute were Sally Manly of Marion County and Ellen Oderman of Monongalia County.

Teacher Consultants for the sessions included Dr. Judy Abbot, Dr. Gwen Rosenbluth, Margaret Clark, Dr. Chris Lavorata, JoEllen Snider, and  Karen Hyde.

Three follow-up sessions will be held following the conclusion of the Summer Institute.  During these sessions, Fellows will have the opportunity to discuss progress in their classroom research, receive updates in writing theory, and share successes/questions in classroom practice.

A highlight of the follow-up sessions will be the opportunity to visit with Dr. Tom Romano, author of Clearing the Way:  Working with Teenage Writers, Writing with Passion:  Life Stories, Multiple Genres, and Blending Genre, Altering Style on November 8.
