Course Syllabus Fall 2007 General Information The textbook for this course is Stars and Galaxies by Michael A. Seeds. We shall use the Fifth Edition, published by Thomson -- Brooks/Cole. There is a packet of materials entitled Astronomy Through Practical Investigations available in the bookstore that is required for homework. In addition to this packet, you will need a ruler and a protractor. We shall try to cover all chapters in the text, but we shall follow a different order for the first five chapters. There will be three hourly tests, whose dates are given below, and a final exam, approximately 1/3 of which will be on material covered between the last hourly test and the final and 2/3 of which will be comprehensive. Each hourly test will count 1/6 of your final grade, the final exam will count 1/3, and the homework will count 1/6. The homework will be assigned during the course, and assignments will be made at least one week before the homework is due. I shall not accept any late homework. I shall announce my office hours, and I urge you to see me if you have any questions on the course material or homework. In addition you should feel free to ask any questions during our class meeting. I shall not take attendance; however, I shall not accept a missed class as an excuse for having missed a homework assignment or for having missed some material which may not be included in the text. If you have to miss a test, you must make arrangements with me BEFORE the test. (Simply sending me e-mail is not sufficient for making arrangements.) Reserve Books The following are on reserve in the Downtown Campus Library:
Exam Dates You must take the tests in the section for which you are registered.
If you are a person with a disability and anticipate needing any type of accommodation in order to participate in this class, please advise me and make appropriate arrangements with Disability Services (293-6700).
