NARRATIVE
The bicycle wheel with
collars is equipped with a pin on the axle which when engaged with the spokes constrains
the axle to turn with the entire wheel. The moment of inertia of the wheel with the locked
axle is the moment of inertia of the rim (mr2)
plus the moment of inertia of the axle (˝mr2).
Because of the large radius of the wheel, the moment of inertia of the locked wheel is
large and its linear and angular velocity down an inclined plane are small.
The moment of
inertia of the wheel with the axle disengaged is just the moment
of inertia of the axle (˝mr2), which
is small. Consequently, linear and angular velocity of the wheel and axle down the
inclined plane are large.
