NARRATIVE
The inertia of a large
object must be overcome before force can be transferred beyond it. Tie two identical
strings to the large ball, one to the top and one to the bottom loop. Hang a small weight
hanger on the lower string.
Quickly jerk the weight hanger downward and only the lower string will break because the inertia of the ball has not been overcome.
Replace the broken string and now pull the weight hangar gradually and the upper string will break because the inertia of the large ball has been overcome and its mass adds additional force on the upper string.
Prepare several lengths of string beforehand.
