SOAP FILM TENSION

EQUIPMENT
redball.gif (326 bytes) Various Soap Bubble Forms

NARRATIVE
There are a few forms which can be used to demonstrate soap film tension. The simplest one consists of a string ring in a wire shape.

Dip the form into a bubble solution (Children's bubble solution is quite adequate.). Remove the form and pierce the inside of the string circle with a pin. This will break the film at this point while leaving the surrounding film intact. The surface tension of this film will pull the ring with equal force.

Other forms such as an octahedron and pyramid that work in the same way are available.
