CAPILLARY TUBES

Capillary Tube Demonstration Devices
NARRATIVE
Two sets of apparatus
are available for demonstration of cohesive and adhesive forces. Water displays
predominant adhesive forces while mercury shows predominant cohesive forces as evidenced
by the shape of their menisci.
Pour colored water into the large reservoir which is connected with four capillary tubes of different diameters.
The water will rise to a greater level in the tubes of smallest diameter.
Another capillary device consists of two tubes of different diameters which are partially filled with mercury. The mercury rises to a greater height in the tube of larger diameter.
