NARRATIVE
A magnetic field is generated perpendicular to the direction of current in a wire. The direction of this field depends on the direction of the current.  Connect the device to about 100 VDC from the large motor generator. The reversing switch may be closed to cause the current to flow either up or down the wire. The compass needle will point in the direction of the magnetic field. Moving the needle around the glass plate to trace out the field. The lamps in this device are only a load to reduce the amount of current in the wire. This demonstration may be televised for easy viewing.
