freed of the English around 1453. The next generation of rulers
would seek inspiration in the Italian Renaissance. Here we see the
portrait of François I, among the greatest of Renaissance kings, and
personal friend of another great Renaissance man, Leonardo da Vinci. * I say "thanks" begrudgingly, since the "English" we're talking about were so only in name. We'll see in Vendée that they were just as French as any French king could be. The Plantagenet family of Eleanor of Aquitaine and her son Richard the Lion-Hearted are very much children of the soil of western France.
