The Isle of Noirmoutier

Our first stop this morning is the Bourrine du Bois Juquaud.  A "bourrine" is a style of house unique to the marshlands of upper Vendée.  When this "land" was first settled, it was literally a battle with the waters.  No regular farmer would even attempt to live here, but the "bourrineur" dug trenches that drained the marsh just enough to build a house that itself is made of the mud and clay from the marsh itself.  Every element of the "bourrineur's" life derived from what nature offered.
