Lest we forget . . .

Our next stop is in the twin villages of Les Lucs-sur-Boulogne.  This is one of the most passionate sites we will visit this summer, for here the inhabitants of both villages were nearly completely exterminated during the Vendée Wars.  On several occasions the counter-revolution here seemed near success in its campaign to restore the monarchy and destroy the republic.  As happened in my native Georgia, a mighty blow was ordered.  The land and towns were to burned to the ground.  Like Sherman marching from Atlanta to the sea, Turreau marched through Vendée.  Almost all in these villages perished.  The Memorial of Vendée stands now in memory of those who died.
