Shannon and Jessica are smiling because I have just whispered to them them magic words "Pretend you're learning something." It's a light moment in a fairly serious day of lectures, exams, discussions. It's a good moment to recover from a fairly rigorous quiz on our visits in Paris. These daily quizzes are a part of each class, but they are as much an exercise in review, discussion, and analysis as a means of obtaining a grade. The major portion of each student's grade will derive from her or his participation in class and in visits, and from the journal and individual cultural project. Several have already begun work on that important part of our course work, and the projects look very, very promising again this year. |
