deangif.gif (70780 bytes)Welcome to the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences!  I would like to wish all new and returning students, faculty, and staff a most pleasant and productive 1999-2000 academic year.

Regardless of whether you are visiting as a prospective student or employee, an alumnus keeping in touch with us, a journalist looking for an expert source, or a state resident interested in learning more about West Virginia’s only land-grant, comprehensive, Carnegie 1 research university, I hope you will find this site informative and enjoyable.

We are looking forward to the new millennium with great anticipation. We have recently broken ground on a new Life Sciences Building for our departments of biology and psychology. The new 196,000 square-foot facility represents an investment of $43 million in innovative technology and vision. In addition, the Eberly College recently took over operations of the West Virginia University Press. We intend to build on the press’s past success and expand its involvement in the publishing of books, compact disks, videos, and multimedia titles that represent significant scholarship or creativity, especially in the broad area of Appalachian studies.

As the largest academic unit within WVU, the Eberly College is comprised of 14 departments, one school with two divisions, and numerous centers, institutes, and laboratories that represent some 30 disciplines of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Among our 300 faculty members are some of the nation’s most distinguished scholars in areas such as biology, chemistry, communication studies, creative writing, geography, history, literary studies, physics, political science, psychology, public administration, and social work. Many of our faculty members are conducting research funded by the university, the state, federal agencies, private foundations, or industry. Undergraduate, as well as graduate students, often have the opportunity to actively work on these exciting projects. We encourage our faculty to balance productive research with conscientious teaching and dedicated public service.

Programs that are currently providing distinction to the Eberly College include the interdisciplinary work of the Center for Literary Computing, the highly-regarded West Virginia Geographic Information Systems Technical Center, the innovative Plasma Physics Lab, and the WVU Debate Team, which achieved a high national ranking last year. Three of our units, the Department of Communication Studies, the Department of Political Science, and the Department of Psychology, have research reputations in their respective disciplines that are among the highest ranking in the nation.

Among our more than 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students majoring in one of 50 degree programs are many distinctly talented young students and a variety of non-traditional students. As a college, we have produced 21 Rhodes Scholars, 13 Goldwater Scholars, 10 Truman Scholars, and three students who have been recognized by USA Today as All-USA Academic Team members.

Should you have any questions about the Eberly College, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of the Dean, located in 201 Woodburn Hall or by calling (304) 293-4611. We are always making an effort to improve our web communication. If you have any suggestions, please send a message by email to our webmaster. Thank you for your interest. Enjoy your virtual visit, and please return soon or visit us in person.

Sincerely,

M. Duane Nellis
