English 302, Editing

This "Editing" course helps students learn the skills needed to edit professional documents. Since editing is more than simply proofreading, the ultimate task of the editor is to evaluate how well a document works for its purpose and intended audience and to make changes and negotiate with the writer on those terms. The comprehensive editing includes evaluating content, style, organization, visual design, word choice, and approach to the material. Because correctness issues such as spelling, punctuation, grammar, and consistency also affects how effective a document is for its audience, an editor is also responsible for proofreading and copyediting documents. Through a combination of large and small group discussion, e-mail conferencing, chatroom workshop, and reading, this course helps students learn the guidelines for and acquire the experience necessary for editing effectively. Furthermore, this course aims to help qualified part-time learners, who may be constrained by time or geographic distance, meet some of the challenges of a degree or certificate program at WVU by fostering critical inquiry and developing communications strategies. English 101 and 102 are prerequisites.
