English 102, Argumentation and Research Writing

This web-based version of English 102 is designed for qualified part-time learners. For these students, the course fosters critical reading and thinking and an awareness of the rhetorical strategies of argument, skills which will be applied to a series of written assignments. Throughout the semester, students examine various kinds of arguments. They are asked to apply the skills of critical reading and thinking to each of these arguments; and, ultimately, they write a longer argumentative paper which analyzes and synthesizes material from various sources and incorporates these sources with their own original, critical argument.

Over the course of the term, students do various kinds of writing. They write both shorter position papers and longer argumentative essays, and they write for themselves and for others. Assignments leading up to the final research project are designed to help them become a more discerning reader and writer who can identify, evaluate, and use effective rhetorical strategies to write persuasively. Because this course is Web-based, all students must have regular and frequent access to the Internet as well as the basic skills necessary to go online, navigate a website, and send and receive electronic messages. Through synchronous discussions in chatrooms and over the telephone, through asynchronous discussion via our Vista course "Discussions" bulletin board and e-mail, and through a number of texts (both written and spoken), students explore the structure of argumentation. English 101 is a prerequisite.
