This was the very first piece of e-lore that I received in response to the attacks, on September 12, 2001. The sender--a friend and former student--is politically quite liberal, so I was a bit surprised to receive this from her. But I think it demonstrates the need to communicate in some way after the attacks--to recognize that we'd all experienced them--and in the first day or two, words seemed insufficient (as her only message, "Love, Holly" illustrates). Here, as the subject line suggests, a picture truly is worth a thousand words.

This well demonstrates the power of e-lore as a communicative medium: at a time when many were shocked into stunned silence, these .jpg images allowed us to express ourselves to one another in purely symbolic ways.

I've tried to categorize the materials in the archive by their dominant image, theme, or genre. You can begin anywhere. Just click on any of the categories to the left to view the items in that part of the archive.
