Hand-made
quilts crafted from feed sacks were quite
common. Cow feed, chicken feed, flour and
sugar all came in tightly woven cotton sacks
of very bright gingham colors. Feed sacks
were used so often for crafting that shop
owners began displaying the sacks on their
counters. Simplicity© offered patterns
specifically for the use of feed sacks in
clothing, curtains and quilts. These patterns
would measure by the poundage of the feed
sacks as well as by the number of feed sacks
needed. Even after the garment was worn
out, people continued to use the fabric
in braided, crocheted, or loomed rugs.
