Miners
working in Scott's Run used to carry
lunch buckets like this one into the
mines on a daily basis. The top
third of the cylindrical container was
used to carry food, while the lower
compartment was used to transport the
miner's daily drinking water. The
bucket is quite large: miners were free
to take leisurely lunch hours since
they were paid by the tonnage of coal
hauled rather than by the hour. And
they naturally had a healthy appetite
by the end of a long shift in the mine!
