REQUIRED TEXT: The Riverside Shakespeare, ed. G. Blakemore Evans. 2nd edition. Boston: HoughtonMifflin, 1997.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: To introduce students to Shakespeare through a study of eleven representative plays; to introduce students to the rudiments of Elizabethan English in order to facilitate their reading of the plays; to understand each play as theater--as works not only to be read but to be seen and heard.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Enrolled students not present by the second class meeting will be deleted from the class. Students who miss more than three class meetings can expect to have their final grades lowered by one letter for every absence beyond the third.

GRADING: Course grades will be based on two hour tests (25 % each) and two take-home tests (25% each). "Pop" quizzes will be used from time to time to assure that students are keeping up with reading assignments; students failing a "pop" quiz will have their final grade reduced by 3% for each quiz failed.

OFFICE HOURS: By appointment and drop-in.

FINAL EXAMINATION: Tuesday, December 10, 3:00-5:00 p.m.

IF YOU HAVE A DISABILITY or other condition that you wish to make the instructor aware of, please do so privately sometime during the first week of classes so that appropriate accommodation, if needed, can be made.
