Course Objectives:

• Become familiar with masterpieces from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East

• Develop a greater appreciation for non-Western cultures

• Identify characteristics of epic, poetry, drama, and fiction

• Write critical essays that explore Western responses to non-Western literary works and cultures

• Recognize both commonalties (universal human experiences) and diversities (historical, artistic, cultural, religious, political, and social contexts) in the literature

Course Information:

There will be three one-hour exams, each covering one-third of the material. The exams will contain short identifications (one paragraph) and one essay question.

There will be two opportunities to write short critical response papers (l200-1500 words).

Much of the learning in this class takes place during class discussion. Thus, I expect you to be in class and prepared with the day's assignment. I take attendance each day; more than four absences will jeopardize your grade.

Grading Information:

There are 500 points possible (3 exams and 2 papers, each worth 100 points)

A=500-450 B= 450-400 C= 400-350 D=350-300 F= 299 & under
