I. Course Description

English 102 is a course designed to teach argumentative and research writing. This course uses technology to enhance your learning of composition in a cross-cultural classroom setting.

II. Course Objectives

This course has been designed to help you write better argument and research papers. The instructor has designed several computer assisted techniques to achieve those ends. Primarily, they are as follows:

1.
Writing is not done in total isolation. Collaboration is an important part of this course. You are expected, therefore, to collaboratively generate ideas for writing, critique each others' writing, and perhaps even venture to do collaborative research projects. Your groups will always be made up of students from your classroom and writing will be done both inside and outside of class; writing and communication today is not a cloistered activity.

2. Independent research using primary sources and inquiry-based problem-solving is an expectation for the course. You will conduct independent research and present your findings in an appropriate final product that will use MLA (Modern Language Association) bibliographic format.

3. Since the course has a cross-cultural focus and enrollment, you are expected to communicate effectively across cultures and to write about cultural issues in your research and argumentative assignments.

.

III. Instructional Methods

1. Evaluation will be done electronically. Your essays will be reviewed, marked and assessed by the using multimedia including digital overlays and audio comments personalized to your essay. Your instructor will assist you to revise and prepare your writing to be the best possible communication.

.2. Various multimedia tools have been developed to assist you in learning to write better. They are easy to use and you will be able to have total and individual control of the rate and frequency of using them. These projects, all of which incorporate video called QuickTime movies, exist to reinforce particular concepts we will study and assignments you will be asked to do.

3 .Online and in-class Powerpoint™ presentations are provided to enhance in-class small-group interaction that you will use within WebCT, a course environment that includes a WebBoard and Five Chat Rooms.
