Changing Students minds

I do not entirely agree with the WVU attendance policy. I do not feel my opinion means that students have the right to skip a class if they can pass the class without attending it. My opinion is that a class attendance is important, and students should attend a class. However, I do not agree with the WVU attendance policy in the point that “instructors may include attendance records in determining the final course records.”

The reason why professors should not include attendance records in determining the final course record is that we have unexpected events like illness, traffic accidents or a death in the family once or twice a semester. Eric Miller said in Daily Athenauem, “ the proposal is unfair to those who have legitimate reasons to miss class….Well, is this the students’ fault?” He is right. That is not students’ fault. We can not attend a class for those reasons, even though we want to attend a class. It is unfair for the policy to force professors to take off the points for those legitimate reasons.

I strongly think that students should attend a class. It is natural for students to attend a class because that is the first step toward learning from professors and classmates in a class. One of my classmates, Russell Cersosimo, said, “I think that if a student can pass a class without going to that class, then why should his grade be affected? We are supposed to be graded on our academic ability.” I agree with him in the point that we are supposed to be graded on our academic ability. However, I do not think that we can pass classes without at least going to classes. How do students know what the assignments are? How do they listen to their classmates’ opinions? Doing assignments and listening to opinions from professors and classmates help to improve their academic ability.

Another reason that students should attend classes is the tuition rate. Going to school is not free and can be very expensive. My parents pay for me, and sometimes I pay for school by myself. I cannot waste money which my parents and I have worked hard to earn.

University students are not children. They have to think of themselves what a most important thing for their goals is. I think that going to school and improving their ability are most important jobs while they are students. Therefore, students should change their minds that they go to school because professors record their attendance.
