This course has been designed to help you write better argument and research papers. The instructor has designed several computer assisted techniques to achieve those ends. Primarily, they are as follows:

1. Writing is not done in total isolation. Collaboration is an important part of this course. You are expected, therefore, to collaboratively generate ideas for writing, critique each other's writing, and perhaps even venture to do collaborative research projects. Your groups will always be made up of students from your classroom and much of the writing will be done in class; collaboration today is not a cloistered activity.

2. Evaluation will be done electronically. Your essays will be reviewed, marked and assessed by the using multimedia including digital overlays and audio comments personalized to your essay. Your instructor will assist you to revise and prepare your writing to be the best possible.

3. Various multimedia tools have been developed to assist you in learning to write better. They are easy to use and you will be able to have total and individual control of the rate and frequency of using them. These projects, all of which incorporate video called QuickTime movies, exist to reinforce particular concepts we will study and assignments you will be asked to do.

Write, write, write. We will do extensive writing throughout the semester:

Attendance is required. Writing is a participative, collaborative process that demands your being present and involved. Unexcused absences will be considered in your final grade. All work is due as shown on the Schedule Page; essays turned in after a deadline are subject to grade reductions.

Departmental English 102 Attendance policy: Excessive absences jeopardize students' ability to succeed. You can miss one class session without your grade being affected. If you miss two or more classes you will normally fail the course. Absences will be counted according to the above guidelines beginning Week 2.

West Virginia University and the instructor for this class are committed to providing equal opportunities for all students and pledge non-discrimination according to race, color, sex, religion, age, handicap, national origin, or sexual orientation.
