2 Grading
Your essays
will be graded based on the number of points earned on the grid
shown below. The criteria--Content, Organization, and Grammar--are
explained more fully later. The points opposite each row indicate
the maximum number of points the essay can earn for each criterion.
In the case of grammar, 2 points will be deducted for each type
of grammatical error. If there are more than ten types of errors,
the essay fails and must be rewritten for regrading.

The points the
essay is awarded will be added and applied to the following scale:
A = 90-100 points
B = 80-89 points
C = 70-79 points
D = 60-69 points

Grading Standards
Content:
36-40
points:
A clear sense
of purpose as indicated by a strong central idea, supported by effective,
concrete detail; clear understanding of audience; interesting and
readable.
32-35
points:
Central idea
apparent, supported by adequate details; some undersanding of audience;
some vagueness of example permissable.
28-31
points:
Central idea
confused; vague, illogical supporting details.
24-27
points: Central idea confused; inaccurate/unclear supporting
details; weak knowledge of audience or purpose.
0-23
points: Central idea missing; absence of supporting details;
knowledge of audience or purpose missing.

Organization:
36-40 points:
Excellence in logical organization, original development,
coherent paragraphs with effective transitions; consistent attention
to proportion and emphasis; avoidance of obvious padding in content.
32-36 points:
Logical organization, original development, coherent paragraphs
with good transitions; consistent attention to proportion and emphasis;
avoidance of obvious padding in content.
28-31 points:
Occasional inappropriate emphasis; transitions clear but mechanical;
organization adequate but not particularly creative.
24-27 points:
Organization, purpose, or audience unclear; redundancy or inconsistency
in supporting evidence; paragraphs incoherent or under- developed;
transitions unclear or nonexistent.
0-23 points:
Paragraphs incoherent and not unified; inadequate development and
arrangement of information; absence of topic sentences within paragraphs.

Grammar (Mechanics
Spelling):
Two points will
be deducted for each type of grammatical error, up to 20 points.
If more than ten types of grammatical errors are present, the paper
fails and must be rewritten for regrading. The two grades will then
be averaged.
