In Class Essay # 1

Say No to Mandatory Attendance

I strongly disagree with the required attendance policy for all West Virginia University undergraduate students. The attendance policy is a major problem with the majority of the student body. Students have many things to deal with while at school and being forced to attend all classes should not be an added problem. The attendance policy infringes on students’ rights to make decisions for themselves on whether they should attend class or not.

As stated in the WVU attendance policy, “At West Virginia University, class attendance contributes significantly to academic success. Students who attend classes regularly tend to earn higher grades and have higher passing rates in courses. Excessive absences may jeopardize students’ grades or even their ability to continue in their courses.” I agree that this statement is probably true for the majority of students, but not for all of the students. There is a plethora of students who can succeed with minimal attendance in class and some can even go without studying. Students like this have been blessed with extra knowledge and should not be punished for being able to do so. I rarely ever read textbooks and miss some classes on a frequent basis. Until this date, I have not had any problems in the classroom due to this. I believe that some classes single out students like me and make things an extra pain by wasting my time. I attend all of the scheduled classes in the courses that I feel I need to attend and I do not think I should have to waste my time attending classes that I could succeed in without attending. One student said, “Some people learn better by teaching themselves which makes strict attendance in lecture classes pointless.” The statement by that student is very true on my behalf.

Professors should not care if students attend class because they are going to get paid regardless. The student is at fault if they decide to skip class for whatever reason. Extreme circumstances come about from time to time and students should not be penalized for taking care of them. Students pay the University to attend the school and they should be able to use their money however they want to.

The average college student is in their early twenties and by that time he or she should be able to take care of themselves. The University does not need to take care of them as a parental figure while students are away from their own parents. Many students go to colleges far away from home to escape their parents and their life back home. Why would they want to go somewhere and have more authority placed upon them? Students need to accept responsibility for their successes and failures in life. Students should do what best works for them. For some it may be attending class and others can get by without attending class.

Mandatory attendance policy at West Virginia University is very unfair and is something that needs to be looked into. Students have rights and freedoms that they should be able to exercise everyday. Choosing to attend class or not should be one of them. The day that the current attendance policy is vanquished will be a major victory for all students across campus.
