Chapter Five is Arthurdale: A Venture in Utopia, and is a very good overview of the Arthurdale project and its problems. Concludes, “the experiment at Arthurdale was a failure,” (108) but admits, “Mrs. Roosevelt never looked at Arthurdale in financial terms.” ER saw Arthurdale as “a chance of happiness for deprived people and an opportunity for long-overdue social reform” (109).

Interesting because of the details. In a statement of payrolls from 1926, 13 of the 23 leading companies were coal companies. In 1926, coal ($4,719,000.00) and glass ($1,776,000.00) had the largest annual payrolls in Monongalia County (126-127).
