General Course Information for Biology 101, Section 2

  1. Attendance: required, you will be responsible for all the material and information presented in the lectures, assigned text readings, supplemental reading, homework and materials on Webct
  2. Lecture examinations, quizzes and homework: No make up exams will be given. If you have an excused absence, your exam or quiz grade will be zero. If you have unexcused absence, you will have your missed exam, quiz, or activity grade computed as a pro ratio of the grades you have on exams, quizzes or activities that you do take. There will be two in class one-hour exams and a two-hour final. Each one-hour exam counts about 20% and the final count for about 30% of the final lecture grade. The grades on unannounced quizzed will account about 15% of the final grade. The activities grades will account for about 15% of the final grade. Everyone must take the final. It will generally emphasize the material covered since the previous exam. Several unannounced quizzed will be given during the semester.
  3. Lecture exam content: The content of the three major exams will cover lecture, text, Webct presentations and activities for the specified interval of the time given in the syllabus. The final exam will be only slightly comprehensive.
  4. During lecture, students will be called upon from time-to-time.
  5. There will be four basic modes of instruction. The text, Webct, lectures and activities. Others modes will also be used on occasion (audio/visual, TV guest lecturer, etc) it is not the intent of the instructor to completely overlap the different methods of presentation. Hence, the student can rely on whichever mode or combination of teaching modes; best suit his or her needs. Also, some assigned text, readings and Webct Material, will not be covered in he lecture, but will be covered on the exams and quizzes.
  6. Text: Required: The Unity and Diversity of Life. (Wadsworth, 8th Edition, Author: Starr and Taggart.
  7. Webct: Presentation will be used mainly for explanation purposes and will also be the basis for quizzes and/or old exam questions. You can access the Webct by logging on with your Mix account Username with an extra .MIX added (e.g.: rjason.mix). The password to access the Webct is the last four digit of your social security number.
  8. The syllabus/outline is only for this section of Biology 101, for this semester, and for this instructor. The attached syllabus /outline serves only as a guide. The instructor reserved the right to postpone or eliminate quizzes, exams (except for the final), and material covered in the class by making a prior oral announcement during a regular scheduled class meeting. Announcements regarding the addition of material or the moving of a scheduled event, will be made at least one week prior to the scheduled change, except in the case of an emergency. The course outline is prepared for the convenience of the student and does not constitute a contract between the student and the instructor.
  9. Disability: If you are a student with a leaning, sensory, or physical disability and feel that you need special assistance in the lecture, reading assignment, or in lecture testing, please see me, in private, on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday afternoon the first week of classes. All the information will be kept confidential.
  10. Student with English as a second language: If you believe you need a certain accommodation for optimal learning, please see me sometimes during the first week of class.
  11. The instructor has no information about or connection with Biology 103.
  12. WVU Policy of social justice: West Virginia University is committed to social justice.
