This course is designed as a senior capstone course with the following objectives:

     1.  As a senior capstone course, the course is designed to allow students to develop areas of study that are of individual interest.   Students will develop a reading list for their chosen topics, will present and discuss the findings from their readings periodically throughout the semester, and will evaluate what they have learned from their readings. 
     2.  Students will develop, implement, and evaluate a teaching/tutoring plan which will form the basis for a teaching journal. 
      3.  Students will further develop their teaching skills through in-class demonstration lessons and will analyze the relationship between teaching goals and practices.

     This course is a general introduction to linguistics which focuses on the different aspects of language: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and sociolinguistics.  Over the course of the semester students will acquire a sense of the components that make up language and a sense of what the study of language is about. The course introduces students to linguistic concepts and gives students the tools for linguistic analysis.  The course also aims to familiarize students with different linguistic processes as they are manifested in a variety of languages.  This approach will enable students to explore linguistic principles through the application of these principles to diverse types of language data.

     This course is designed as a general introduction to the topic of second-language acquisition with the following objectives:

      1.  The course introduces students to linguistic concepts relevant to first language (L1) acquisition as a basis for the study of linguistic concepts relevant to second language (L2) acquisition. 
      2.  Students will become familiar with the factors that are unique to the L2 acquisition process.  Students will explore the linguistic concepts discussed in class through their own language learning experiences, classroom observations, data analyses, and language learner surveys. 
      3.  Students will explore the use of language learning strategies as a means of becoming more effective language learners.

This course is an introduction to the learning and teaching of second language reading.  Over the course of the semester, students will become familiar with the theories, research, and methods for teaching reading to non-native speakers.  Students will develop an introductory understanding of a wide range of reading issues and will learn a variety of techniques for teaching different reading skills.

        This course explores the integration of linguistic theory, language analysis, and teaching while focusing on the areas of grammar and vocabulary.  The course is designed to achieve three goals.  First, students will become acquainted with theories and concepts concerning the nature of second-language  grammatical and lexical acquisition.  Second, students will examine second language learner data in order to discover learning processes and learner strategies related to grammatical and lexical development.  Finally, students will apply this knowledge to the teaching of grammar and vocabulary.  This approach will enable students to explore the relations between theory, analysis, and practice relevant to adults in second language settings.      This course has been designed to help you develop and/or choose foreign/second language syllabi and materials for classroom, institutional or research use. More specifically, you will 

     1) learn how to adapt, evaluate, and critique existing materials;
     2) learn how to design, write and refine your own language syllabi/materials, including directions, simplifications, activities, realia, etc.;
     3) become familiar with some basic concepts related to listening, speaking, reading, and writing in foreign/second language learning and learn to write appropriate methods for developing second language skills; and
     4) become familiar with the theoretical bases and current issues that underlie syllabus design and materials development.

     This course presents an integration  of the theoretical and the practical: phonetic theory, language practice, and pedagogy. The course is designed to meet several objectives:

     Students will become familiar with American English phonetics including segments, stress, rhythm, intonation, and linking in connected speech within a communicative context;
     students will get extensive practice in phonetic transcription;
     students will experience various techniques for teaching pronunciation to second language learners;
     students will develop, implement, and evaluate a teaching plan;
     and the class will discuss issues related to teaching pronunciation to second language learners (e.g., socio-cultural factors, personality factors, individual learner goals).
