The kitchen is the room you walk into when entering my apartment. It is about 9’ x 11’ and has a grey linoleum floor. The walls are white and there are cabinets on two of them. When you walk in the door there is an orange, brown and red rug where you can wipe your feet. The refrigerator is directly to the right, and to the left is my whale coat rack, where I hang my coats and scarves. Also on the left is a door that leads out to my balcony, if that’s what you want to call a 2’ x 4’ rectangle with railing around it. It’s basically only used for smoking cigarettes since it isn’t big enough to do much more than stand on. There’s a big gap under the door that causes a pretty bad draft. It was supposed to be fixed this summer but hasn’t been yet. I have a draft blocker with rabbits on it that I keep in front of it. There is also a brown rug in front of the door, more as a decoration than for wiping your feet.
Directly across the kitchen from this door is my
stove. There are small amounts of counter space to each side of the stove. My Crock Pot is to the left and there is a spoon rest to the right. Under this counter is a cabinet where I keep pots and pans and a drawer for spatulas and spoons. Above the stove is a cabinet where I keep things I don’t use very often, and to the left of it is another cabinet. Even though this cabinet is fairly small, it is where I keep most of my food. The sink is to the right of the stove, on the other side of the counter space where I keep my spoon rest. It is usually full of dishes waiting to be put in the dishwasher. I keep all of my cleaning supplies under the sink. To the left of the sink is more counter space, which is mostly taken up by appliances. Here is where I keep my toaster, coffee pot and George Foreman grill.
Under the counter is my favorite part of the kitchen, the
dishwasher. It saves me so much time by washing my dishes, even though it doesn’t always do the best job. Above the counter is a shelf for my microwave and blender. Built onto the top of the shelf is another small cabinet similar to the one above my stove. Since it is pretty hard to get to, this is where I keep dishes I don’t use very often, like glass baking dishes. On the next wall is my refrigerator. To the left of it is a small counter where I keep flour, sugar and bread. Under this is a cabinet where I keep cookie sheets and pizza pans, and a drawer for silverware. There is another small cabinet above it for plates, bowls and glasses. The least convenient cabinet in my kitchen is the one above the refrigerator. This is where I keep storage containers and plastic cups and plates. I’m 5’10” and I can hardly get to things in this cabinet without a stool.
Even though there are small inconveniences in my kitchen like the hard to reach cabinets and broken stove drawer, I have grown to love it since I’ve moved in to my apartment.
