Scholarship
As a scholar, I study language variation within communities and between
time periods. Technically, I am a quantitative sociolinguistic variationist.
I focus mostly on US dialects, specifically Southern English varieties.
Teaching
As a teacher, my primary goal is to teach people about how language works.
Most often, this takes place during my Introduction to Language. I also teach
how language varies over time in History of the English Language and over cultures and geography in American English.
Service
In service of the community, I teach about the social and cultural value
of dialects, conduct dialect awareness programs, and perform as an expert
witness in legal cases.
