The Gaia Hypothesis

Gaia Rising

In that same year, Lovelock began to think how earth’s unlikely combination of gases resulted in the homeostatic state of Earth’s biosphere. This homeostatic state is what maintains the environmental conditions conducive for life. By the end of the 1960’s Lovelock had organized his theory. A friend of Lovelock's suggested he name it Gaia, after the ancient Greek earth goddess. Lovelock first proposed the theory on his own. Then in 1973, with American biologist Lynn Margulis, Lovelock formally proposed his Theory of Gaia as a control system.
