The Gaia Hypothesis

Dr. Lovelock and fellow scientist Diane Hitchcock examined the atmospheric
data from Mars and found Mars to be in a state of chemical equilibrium whereas
Earth has been shown to be in a extreme case of chemical disequilibrium. Lovelock
and Hitchcock concluded that Mars was lifeless, and a decade later Viking
I and II confirmed their conclusion.
