The Gaia Hypothesis
Introduction

In the 1960’s, NASA approached Dr. James Lovelock and wanted him to investigate the possibility of life on Mars. Lovelock proposed a top-down view of the planet which would involve analyzing the atmosphere of Mars. If the planet did not contain life, the atmosphere would be in a chemical equilibrium state. If the planet did compose life then the activities of the life forms would result in an atmosphere far from an equilibrium state.
