D/F Recovery Assignment

3rd Exam, Biology 102-004

Due Friday, April 21

The basics:

·       You’re eligible for this assignment ONLY if you scored less than 70 pts on the 3rd test AND did not do the first or second D/F Recovery Assignments.  (If you did better than 70% and want some free help with study skills, come see me.)

·       It’s worth up to 10 points, but won’t raise your test grade above 70.

·       See me if you need help.

·       To get credit, you have to do the WHOLE assignment—even if you only want a few points.

·       It’s due at or before the beginning of class on 4/21/06.  (Early work is welcome!  Late work will not be accepted.  Printer problems are not an excuse—plan ahead.  Do not send by email without permission in advance.)

·       After grades are posted, you must PICK UP YOUR ASSIGNMENT or you will lose points.

Purpose of the assignment:  (1) You’ll “recover” some missed points AND (2) practice study skills to prepare for the next exam.  Assignments that seem hastily or lazily prepared will lose points.  This is work you should do anyway for the next test!

THE NITTY GRITTY ASSIGNMENT DETAILS:

1.     Come to my office and review your test.  Spend some time taking notes on what you missed.

2.     Do the readings for this week and take good, brief notes (as described below):
Immune System (24.0-24.18)

a.      Overall format:

                                          i.     Keep it neat and clear (bulleted list or outline).

ii.     These notes should make sense, and look like something you could use to study.

iii.     Notes must be in YOUR OWN words.

b.     For each numbered section of the chapter

                                          i.     write a short summary that conveys the “big picture,” including

1.     the number and title of the section

2.     the MAIN IDEA of each paragraph, in 1-3 short, meaningful phrases; more if needed to describe a complex process

3.     the MAIN IDEA of the whole section in 1-3 short, meaningful phrases
(this is the most important part of any reading assignment in this class)

4.     any VOCABULARY with definitions in your own words
(this is the least important part of any reading assignment for my class)

ii.     summarize the illustrations with short, meaningful written comments

iii.     indicate in the margin when or if this material was covered during lecture class (dated notes can be helpful…)

iv.     Answer the questions in the tan boxes in your own words

2.     Hand your work in on time or early.

3.     Do the Chapter 24 (Immune System) “self-assessment” quiz in WebCT.  Print out a copy of the first page and attach it to this assignment.

4.     Pick up your assignment in class on Monday, April 24... or you will lose points each day.
