D/F Recovery Assignment
1st Exam, Biology 102
The basics:
· You are eligible if you scored less than 70 points on the 1st test. (This is the score listed in WebCT.)
· A completed assignment is worth up to 10 points. You must follow ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS for full credit.
· The assignment is due at the beginning of class on ____________________.
· As part of the assignment, you will hand in detailed notes on Chapter __________. See below for other details.
· This is a ONE TIME ONLY event; make sure to study for future tests! See me if you need help.
Purpose of the assignment: You will recover points AND practice useful study skills. This should help you prepare for the next exam. Assignments will be graded with this in mind, and those that seem hastily or lazily prepared will lose points. This is work you should do anyway for every test!
Restrictions:
1. No test grade will be raised to more than 70%.
2. Incomplete or late assignments will not be graded. (Yes, you must do the whole assignment.)
3. Your assignment must be readable and in your own words.
4. You will lose points if you do not collect your assignment promptly. Check your e-mail!
THE NITTY GRITTY
ASSIGNMENT DETAILS:
Read assigned pages on _______________________ and take detailed notes. These notes should be the kind of summary that you (or someone else) could use to review material quickly for a test. Include the main ideas and their meanings and importance. Your notes should be organized and shorter than the original reading.
1. An outline (or bulleted list) for each section of the reading. Your notes can be brief phrases (instead of sentences), with enough detail to be useful for later study. Please make these items a SINGLE outline, and group them by section.
a. For each numbered section of the chapter, list
i. its number and title
ii. the MAIN IDEAS, stated briefly (1-2 phrases with enough details to be useful for studying later.)
1. for each individual paragraph, in your own words
2. for each illustration (if it is just decorative, say so)
3. summary of the whole section, in your own words
iii. answer to tan boxed question in your own words
iv. any questions you have or stuff you don’t understand
v. any vocabulary with brief definitions in your own words
b. Include notes in the margin showing
i. date this material was covered in lecture class
ii. whether the material was skipped in lecture
2. A printout of questions from WebCT showing that you have answered at least some questions.
