Welcome to the world of animal
physiology! The purpose of this course is to provide students with an
understanding of the physiological processes shared by a variety of
animals. These shared processes occur at all levels from the
molecular to the systemic and provide a basis for understanding animal
function despite the complexity and diversity within the animal kingdom.
It is assumed that all students in this course will have an understanding
of the chemical, physical and biological background material that is
essential for the course. This basic material includes the structure
of matter; the properties of water, solutions, acids and bases, and pH; the
structure and properties of biological macromolecules; diffusion and
osmosis; and enzymes and energetics. You will be expected to review
this material on your own.

There will be three in-class
exams during the semester, each worth 150 points. The final exam will
be comprehensive, and is worth 250 points. Exams will cover material
from lectures, discussions, and assigned readings. Unannounced
quizzes and online labs will each constitute 15% of the final grade.
Grading will be based on the total number of points earned.
> 900 points = A 800-899 = B
650-799 = C 500-649 = D
< 500 = F
One of the purposes of the
quizzes is to encourage you to keep up with the course material. You
should review your lecture notes on a daily basis, and supplement them with
information from your textbook as required.
Attendance is required.
Students with written documentation of an unavoidable absence during one of
the test dates will be given the option of taking a make-up exam or having
their grade pro-rated. I will corroborate all excuses by contacting
the individual providing the excuse. If you do not have an approved
excuse, you will not be allowed to make up any work missed.
If you are learning, sensory,
or physically disabled and feel that you need special assistance in
lecture, reading assignments, testing, or any other aspect of the course,
please contact me early in the semester. All matters will be held in
the strictest confidence.
