Lecture 2:  Biomembranes


Sherwood- Chapter 2

Objective:  To understand the characteristics that distinguish animal cells from prokaryotes and how the animal cell membrane functions.

1.  Membrane organization
 a.  lipid bilayer, membrane proteins and carbohydrates
2.  Permeability characteristics of phospholipid bilayers
 a.  simple diffusion (passive transport)
 b.  diffusion through a labile or fixed aqueous channels
 c.  carrier-mediated (facilitated or active) transport
 d.  chemical or electrical gradients
